Is It Possible Not to Fantasize Sexually About Richard Armitage?

Perhaps I am misreading, but I often get the feeling there is this belief that people who do not have sexual fantasies of Richard Armitage are somehow unhealthy or dishonest since everyone must have sexual fantasies of him. I’ve stated several times that I do not have sexual fantasies of him. Sometimes that’s met with good natured scoffing and sometimes it’s met with outright disbelief. Seldom is it met with agreement — unless in email. It seems to me (which means I could be wrong) that there is little public agreement with me because people do not want to be judged as sexually repressed. I’m sorry that dynamic has occurred, i.e., that people are muted by a fear of being labeled. So I come with this post to hopefully alter the dynamics such that someone can share freely about whatever they think on this topic.

Here’s why I don’t have sexual fantasies about Richard Armitage. I choose not to have them. From early childhood I’ve had a very active and vivid imagination. My family and close friends have often remarked on it. There is also a person with whom I am sexually connected. I adore him as my love and the father of my four children, and remain faithful to him not only physically but in the most important of places — my mind. If I were to let myself have a sexual fantasy of someone other than him, it would be an unhealthy distraction for me because I think I would become attached to someone who was featured in my sexual fantasies. This is one reason I tamped down my imagination for so many years. I knew its power to enslave me. Thankfully, I’ve been coming to a place where I could tap into its wonders without it submerging most everything of value to me. For that I give God credit.

So what am I about here? Besides liking to joke around, I am fascinated with the human condition which includes Richard Armitage’s portrayals of such, my own reactions to that and the reactions of others.

Okay, I have now shared what I think and hope the balance of my blog pieces have made it clear someone does not have to agree with my thinking on this to have a conversation. None of us are exactly alike, and I appreciate that.

Mining Gold

Last post about my reading of this year’s FanstRAvaganza.

Many times I’m tempted to turn serious on this blog. The few times I have are unsatisfying because I lack skills, but I press on, and one of the things that inspires me to do so is the rich application of Servetus’ skills to her pieces. I’ve often thought how rewarding it would be to be one of her students, and in a way I am already. Certainly when she deigns to share something of how she does what she does (scroll down to ‘Another Kind of Creativity’), I listen.

Once you’ve read that piece, go on and read the rest: the insinuation of North and South into her classroom, illusions of Richard III, the assessment of RichardArmitageOnline as a great site, the discussion of Guy’s durability, and the two interviews with fans.

All serve as a reminder that with a little investment of time, we’re getting what others are paying big bucks to receive.

My Trip to New York

Unlike my fantasy trip to New Zealand, this one I’m taking, and certainly to try to see ‘The Hobbit’ premiere, and perhaps meet some other fans in the tri-state area. I believe the latter would be as much fun as the premiere! And cliche’ as it sounds, I love New York. No clue how many times I’ve been there. SO and I and the kids even lived there part of one summer. That’s when my children fell in love with it too, and now I have two other very compelling reasons to go there and will go whether there is a premiere or not:

One of the darlings is in her first year living there, and the other darling has been there for almost three years. Normally, I would visit them during the summer since the winters can be miserable. But my girls are going out of town for a big chunk of the summer, and besides, they’re also coming home for a visit. So December it will be!

Dear Richard,

Love you, but I’m not sure I would make a trip on your behalf. Something else fairly compelling would have to be thrown in. Somehow I think you would understand this.

Sincerely,
One of your fans who likes to act crazy but who’s startlingly sane when it comes to expenditures. :D

My final FanstRAVaganza recap coming later today.

Almost Done

My continuation of reading FanstRAvaganza posts.

Fanny (aka Iz4blue or Sinjoor) has a wonderful series of conversations with various fan fiction authors. If you like fan fic, are thinking about reading fan fic, have read fan fic and want to read some more or you’re thinking about writing your own fan fic, check out this series which begins here.

I love the way Jonia has divided her posts into academic subjects — math, science, psychology, etc. I’ve always been a math and science girl, so the post on his legs and feet were of particular interest. :D

Nat had some fun stuff as usual with her games, but she also has a way of making connections with people, which obviously resulted in a lovely series of guest posts from SiouxsieSioux to Liza aka LonghairedToad to Phoebe (one of my favorite fans) to a newcomer that is a total delight, Mary! Funny and packed with a lot of truth. LOL!

Then there’s Traxy, who usually has something entertaining and provoking to say. No disappointments this year either. She asks the question I’ve been trying to articulate an answer to but not sure I have quite yet. And concerning RA, are we looking for a hero?. Or is it our admiration of his passion for his art? Or maybe because he’s a loyal guy? Or do some of us just love to love him? As for Traxy’s other two questions, I’m not sure of the answers but probably have a lot more to say on it later.

That’s all for today. One more blogger tomorrow.

Can I Take It All In?

Moving onto the FanstRAvaganza posts for what is known as the anchor or core — bloggers who posted each day of the event. Just to be clear, my intent is not to highlight every post I’ve read. That would defeat the purpose of this exercise, which is to share what struck me enough to make me write something about it, and yes, in hope that this might send you there to check it out and read the rest of their wonderful posts. :D

Mulubinba is up first. The thing to remember with her blog pieces is they are not little bits to be eaten like cotton candy which evaporates almost immediately in your mouth. These pieces are to be savored and also made a reference point. This makes it difficult to just highlight one of these, but I’m going to list the one or two I would read if there’s no time to read anything else. Given her investment in ‘The Hobbit’, I had to read her detailed piece on Thorin’s costume and props as well as her piece about visiting the ‘The Hobbit’ locations. But also check out the post about an actor’s physical preparation for roles and how this relates to avoiding injury. Okay, that was three. LOL!

Bccmee is known for being prolific with her graphics, and she doesn’t disappoint during FanstRAvaganza, but she’s also becoming known for her being interactive with the fans, and that was certainly the hallmark of her FanstRA postings. I loved the drag and drop magazines but also be sure to check out her interview with the dad of the boy who had scenes with RA in ‘Captain America’.

Christine or CDoart has a thoughtful piece about men who are into history. Maybe I should cut SO a break every now and then since he’s a man who is enormously interested in history. LOL! And I adored the piece on history and fantasy and how they may relate to Richard Armitage.

On this next blog, you get two great writers, Judiang and Fitzg, in one place. Judi comes clean about where she’s headed, and the tale begins here (don’t peek at the ending!) Judi, I’m still laughing as I write this. :D
And then there’s Fitz, who honestly needs a blog. The woman has a lot of interesting things to say, and she may yet turn me into a Richard III zealot. LOL!

Okay, that’s it for today; more tomorrow.

A Celebration Along the Way!

More perusal of this year’s FanstRAvaganza posts.

And now for Phylly, who celebrated her 2nd blogiversary!

A 1st anniversary of blogging is special since blogging is not as easy as it looks, and obviously a second one is even more special. Congrats to Phylly on this accomplishment, and it couldn’t happen to a nicer person.

Phylly and I have known each other for a while now — before RAFrenzy was born, and I’ve found repeatedly that we’re sympatico about a lot of things and most especially in our taste of music and humor and of course male actors. Phylly also has the “distinction” ;-) of being the inspiration for the Do Wah Diddy Diddy Award, which I’ll have to award again sometime soon.

Phylly, take care and I look forward to year three. :)

More tomorrow as I get into the anchor bloggers.

Continuing the Stroll through FanstRAvaganza

More strolling through FanstRAvaganza.

E.B. Darcy speculates about Thorin’s role. Interesting speculation on where the movie will end, and I second the advice to “Read the book before you see the movie!” Then E.B tries to get us ready for the marketing of Thorin. I’m especially interested in an audiobook (more on that later). Of course all of this has her wondering where it might lead RA’s career.

Grati comes with her Crazy Caption contest, and then a poem about RA from an interesting perspective. Suddenly I’m hungry. ;-)

Angie (aka FedoraLady) takes us through a bit of her odyssey in making fan videos. And instead of the usual interview, the Hot Henchman interviews Lady Writer. :D

Fabo and her friend and fellow RA lover, Zibeline, thoroughly explore the power of the Armitage eyes and lashes, and then Fabo muses about who could play Anne Neville to Richard’s III. I’m starting to get into this RIII thing. LOL!

I’ve really enjoyed going through these posts. One more tagteam blogger tomorrow, and then I move onto the anchor bloggers.

Promo still courtesy of TheOneRing and screencap courtesy of Fabo’s blog.

Captured by a Sense of Wonder

Continuing with my foray into the FanstRAvaganza posts for this year.

Several fans have talked about Richard Armitage paper dolls. An attempt to recapture our childhoods? I know that’s what it is for me, but Agzy has taken it a step further and created some, which I doubt most kids would possess. LOL! And she’s also now running a contest for “Paper Richard.”

Ana Cris explains the significance of the Powhiri, and Richard Armitage and ‘The Hobbit” cast’s part in it, but first read her two excellent pieces on the significance of mountains in a culture’s identity and as it relates to Tolkien. These posts had a special significance for me since I live in the mountains and relish their power and effect on who I’ve become. Here is a place not far from my house, and oddly enough it’s named after one of SO’s relatives:

This is near 11,500 feet where the treeline ends.

JasRangoon thinks Richard Armitage should have kids, and she tries to answer the question of what they could look like. She also gifts us with a modern story of John and Margaret. Which John and Margaret? You must have only seen Spooks or Robin Hood. LOL! This John and Margaret. I started reading and immediately backed up to the beginning. Wow! This is her first fanfic. So far so good!!

Melanie of Melanie’s Musings believes Harry Kennedy is the near perfect man. Well, yeah! :D I found myself nodding — a lot — and then I got to the poll and thought my vote would still be in the minority. Oh, how wrong I was.

More tomorrow.

A Little Hair of the Dog

If you’re feeling a bit hungover from all of the FanstRAvaganza posts, I have just the thing for you. It’s an RA blog. No, wait, you’re going to love it (if you don’t already). It doesn’t require intense contemplation although some of it might make you contemplate intensely. It only requires you sit back and let it come at you. And it will come at you and come at you, and clear your head in the process. Or maybe not, but it does clear mine.

I saw the linked post about a year ago and have kept up with the blog since then. Of all the tumblr accounts which frequently post on RA, no one matches this one for frankness. It made me want to interview Caroline, its owner, and I finally got ’round to it.

We started off chatting, and I quickly realized Caroline is just as honest and direct in a conversation as she is on her blog. Along the way, she revealed some of what makes her her and also had some very interesting things to say about tumblr and its appeal that I think you might find interesting if you’re new to the platform. Even if you don’t want to do tumblr after this post is done, you may want to take the 30-Day Richard Armitage challenge she authored, and which has swept through a number of traditional blogs, and I think some forums as well as tumblr. One more word before you comb over the site; it is not always safe for work.

Frenz: I asked for the interview because you were one of the first tumblr accounts about Richard Armitage, and there’s an honesty to your posts that hits between the eyes. I love that. So why Richard Armitage as the subject of many of your posts?

Caroline: There’s just something about Richard, you know? Once you’ve been hooked, you can’t really get free of him.

Frenz: Yeah, I know.

Do you think Richard Armitage is honest? Or is that something actors can really be given that they pose as someone else?

Caroline: From what I’ve seen and read from him, yeah I do. He just seems like the type of person who despite wanting to hide, he will always be as honest as he can.

Frenz: Is there a role where he nailed a character so honestly that it still resonates with you?

Caroline: Probably Lucas North, especially in series 9.

Frenz: Any particular scene(s) that really struck you?

Caroline: The torture and hanging scenes in 8.4 were amazing, and his final scene in 9… I’m not even sure if these are synonymous with honesty, but his acting was absolutely brilliant.

Frenz: I’m not as partial to Series 9, but he should have gotten some sort of award for the acting in 8.4. Phew. With respect to Series 9 I think I was biased by the overall set up and not him so much.

Caroline: The final scene affected me pretty deeply.

Frenz: Why do you think that is?

Caroline: Just the whole ‘I am nothing’ speech. I could relate to that.

Frenz: This is what I love about you. Damned honest and cut to the chase. Yeah, that was a good speech. He has a way of making people connect with him.

Caroline: He really does. It’s the emotion and mental acting he does. Probably because I am a very emotional and mental person, a lot of his stuff resonates with me.

Frenz: Has any other actor had that effect on you?

Caroline: No, they haven’t. I guess that’s why Richard is special.

Frenz: I understand! Which role did you see first?

Caroline: Well, I would have seen either the Marple episode or the George Gently episode first, but it was S3 Guy who I really noticed, even though I had been watching the other 2 series of RH.

Frenz: There are so many people who becomes fans with Guy S1 or S2. I’m wondering what it was about S3 that was so different. But I think I might know. He was more of the odd man out in that one than he was with the other two series.

Caroline: Yeah. Plus the whole tortured soul thing. And the redemption arc. And his new costume and the hair.

Frenz: Yep, I loved the redemption arc, and I loved the hair. :D I think RA plays a lot of characters who have a redemption arc or have the potential for one.

Caroline: Yeah, he does it so well. I’d love to read some of his character diaries.

Frenz: You and me both! So you’ve been a fan for a year and a half, and I’ll bet there are some things you haven’t seen, but have you seen North and South? I ask because I don’t want to assume. So what did you think of it?

Caroline: I’ve seen most of his roles.

Frenz: Spoken like a true addict! LOL!

Caroline: But yes, I’ve seen N&S. I actually did a post about it today, as part of the 30 day challenge.

Frenz: I understand that feeling about N&S. There are so many other roles that deserve equal time. Changing the subject a bit. With respect to your humor, what do you think has had the most influence on you?

Caroline: British comedy, definitely. I think the two main comedy troupes I watched the most were Monty Python and The Goodies, who are both known for their ‘silly’ humour. Nowadays it’s more QI type comedy, which is more witty maybe? Almost any stand-up comic who has appeared on QI or other British tv show panels such as “Would I Lie to You?”, “8 out of 10 Cats” and “Mock the Week”, is likely to make me laugh. I also love sketch comedy, which has come from my love of Python.

Frenz: Have you ever blogged before, and what exactly made you do it this time?

Caroline: Well, I’ve been online since 1996, so I guess I tend to gravitate to whatever other people are doing. I have so many accounts at so many places! I’ve had online journals, and have attempted to blog, but I think that the traditional blogging sites and methods weren’t for me. I’d always start out with good intentions, but after a while I’d forget it, or run out of things to write about. So I don’t think that I’d go back to traditional blogging, now that I have Tumblr.

Frenz: What drew you to tumblr? You have mentioned your friend who runs Fyeah Raarmitage, but I was wondering if it was something else that you liked as a reader of tumblr, something that made you think, “yeah, I want to do that too.”

Caroline: At first it was just curiosity. There was this blog on there someone ran, and it was all a bit weird watching it from the outside. So I joined and started posting Richard, and people started following me. The thing about Tumblr is, which makes it different from other blogging platforms, is that it’s also social media, because you interact with the people you follow and who follow you by reblogging their posts, replying to their posts and sending messages in their ‘ask box’ or ‘fanmail box’. People on the outside tend to think it’s really confusing, but I think that’s because a lot of the time they’re only seeing one side of the experience. Tumblr users run their blogs from the dashboard which is where all the activity is. You see all the posts the people you follow make, newest at the top, infinity down the bottom. The only real problems I have with Tumblr is that it is extremely hard to avoid spoilers, gif seem to appear almost immediately after something has been broadcast, and the fact that you can’t control what other people post means you can see a lot of stuff which doesn’t really interest you (depending on who and how many people you follow). But all in all, you get back what you put into it.

I also love how visual Tumblr is. There are a lot of people who make amazing gifs and graphics. I like posting pictures the most, and the photoset feature lets me be a bit more creative about it by allowing us to choose a set of photos which will be grouped together in one post. Memes are jumped upon very quickly as well, which can be fun.

Another thing about Tumblr is that it’s become a place for fandom to gather. Richard’s fanbase there isn’t as big as some other actors, but it’s definitely grown since I first joined. I used to be the only person who posted on the Richard Armitage tag, but now there are quite a few of us, with our personal blog which may feature RA, and the specialty blogs, such as Richard Armitage confessions. My Richard Armitage Quotes have become popular as well. I don’t know exactly why I started making them. I just thought it would be a good idea to make simple graphics out of his quotes!

Frenz: I love the quotes! More cutting to the chase. Finally, you also mentioned how you love Australia. If you would, tell me what it is you love so about Australia. I would love to hear it. I’ve always been fascinated with it myself and LOVE to hear from the people who live there.

Caroline: I think I love Australia because it’s my home. I grew up here. I think we’re a quite laid back country. Australia is very beautiful, with our unique fauna and flora, but to counter that beauty there’s the natural disasters. Recently it’s been floods (I haven’t been affected, living on high ground), but before that it was drought and bushfire, and we get cyclones in the tropics. Australia has been called ‘the lucky country’ and in a way I guess we are, but Australia does have its problems which I won’t go on about here. In general it’s a great place to live, apart from the fact that it’s so far away from everywhere else!

I asked Caroline to provide a bio, and honest as usual, here it is:

31 years to talk about… I am an Australian living at home with my parents while I get my teaching degree. I hopefully graduate in a few months, and I ideally I would like to work in a preschool. I am the eldest of 4 children, and I grew up in the 80s and 90s. I have a pet cat named Persia and a family dog named Spike, who is a Jack Russell
cross something. I spend a large amount of my spare time online, usually. I watch a lot of Youtube. I also watch tv and dvds quite a bit. I also have mental health issues, and have been struggling with major depressive disorder and general anxiety for most of my life.

To find out more about Caroline and her fascination with Richard Armitage, check out her 30 Day Challenge. Begins here — scroll down for the first day. And since the interview, I’m noticing a little love for Fassbender too. :D edit: Caroline just replied, “Yes he has kinda appeared on there, but he won’t take the place of Richard!” That’s good although Fassbender’s not a bad runner up. LOL!

The rest of this week and next I’m going to catch up on my FanstRAvaganza reading and probably highlighting some of the posts. So stick around if, like me, you didn’t get all of your reading done in a week.

What’s Coming?

This is my last post for FanstRAvaganza 3, and as always, I remind you that I’m part of a larger conversation which is found here.

What a week?! Yes, this seems to be a drumbeat in the RA blogsophere. But phew, it’s a great way to express what’s happened, and for those who didn’t make it around to all of the posts this week, I hope you know they are not going away. Christine of CDoart has lovingly preserved easy access to them again this year, and I hope she knows how much we all appreciate it. You can access here.

Thank you to all of the bloggers who participated. You are all lovely, and it would be lovely to meet all of you face to face sometime. We’ll have to plan that.

Others behind the scenes were Judiang, Traxy, Natalie, Mulubinba, bccmee, Fabo, and a special thanks to Servetus for being our coordinator. Lovely job!

From here, it will be interesting to see what RA Blogosphere develops by this time next year, and yes, we’re already talking about F4. LOL! Last year we had a bit of an increase. This year? I’m wondering if it will be the explosion I’ve been anticipating. Whatever happens, so far it’s been a lot of fun, and I hope we all continue to find it rewarding to discuss the subject. Or is that the object? :D
