You should write about The Crucible. EVERYONE should write about it.

The reason that I have been trying to link every longer fan reaction to the play that I have found on a blog or site — and I look for new ones every day — is that I’m trying to create a broad record of the reactions to the play by non-professionals. No one should take my decision to write about the play myself as a signal that I think others should not write about it. I will continue to search for other reactions and link them here in order to do what I can to assure that more people see them. Everyone will have a different one — because really, everyone is seeing a slightly different play — and we should rejoice in that, in finding as many as possible.

If you do want to publish something and you don’t have a platform, I hope you know that there are plenty of blogs (including this one) that would be happy to do it for you.

A Worthy Read

Richard Armitage as John ProctorServetus goes to The Crucible. I am jealous. I’m also not surprised she’s done this. I would do it too if I could!

I wish her every joy of the experience.

Many of you already know about her going, but some of you are new and may not be familiar or very familiar with her. Let me introduce you. She is a fellow RA blogger and one I have read off and on for years. Many of the posts I’ve read are fantastic. This is generally what I’ve thought of them.

And now she is going to let us all in on The Crucible, and I am going to sit back and take it all in, and especially when I consider there may be no Crucible in New York.

This is where I started reading although there may be other posts which should be read before this one. I leave you to ferret that out for yourselves.

I’m Just Going to Say It

Some of you already know I think it, and please forgive me if it sounds arrogant. That is not how I feel at all. I’m still flabbergasted.

Every time I want to look at Richard Armitage’s timeline, I have to search it because I’ve been too busy to make a list. And when I search it, I see that above and get a stupid grin on my face and laugh involuntarily. One time SO was standing nearby, and I had to be nefarious about what made me laugh. LOL! How old am I? Do not answer that! I had to be sly because SO would have royally taken the Mickey out of me.

Maybe I’ll stop grinning at some point when this becomes old hat, but I’m having a hard time thinking this would ever become old hat. And this morning I can’t contain my exuberance.

In fact, I’m laughing as I write this and thinking about how this blog was supposed to be a 2-3 month lark. Thankfully, SO is out of earshot. And ohmygosh, if some of you knew how many times I’ve said I was going to quit! It’s pretty much a quarterly thing for me and sometimes more often. I’m still not sure how long I can go with this, but for now, this is still a lot of fun. Thanks, Richard. :D

note to self: Remember you have never taken this place seriously; don’t start now. Also, remember Twitter followers can be fickle even when they don’t intend to be. It happens, so don’t forget that. For now, just go with it and hope others have as much fun coming along for the ride.

What It is About Nathan Kress

Kress_1100-1024x558As I said in a previous post, I just adored Nathan Kress in the new movie Into the Storm, and I wanted to find out more about him. So I asked Kelly aka @NBNathanKress, “Why Nathan?”

Her reply:

Like the majority of Nathan’s fans, I first became familiar with him thanks to “iCarly.” The show started off as background noise for me, but by the second season, I started to tune in more. I also learned that a lot of people I knew from other fandoms liked this show. While the show could definitely be wacky, the cast had wonderful chemistry and could tackle both comedy and drama. By the third season I believe, Twitter started to kick off and the fans were able to follow the cast and learn a bit more about them.

One thing that really stood out about this cast was that they all seemed to be pretty well grounded. They didn’t appear to be spoiled Hollywood divas. They were just teens who happened to act. That was refreshing.

Nathan_Kress_thumbs_upI’ve also always had a thing for what I call “adorkable” guys – cute guys who don’t take themselves too seriously. One of the jokes in the Nathan Kress fandom is about his inability to dance. There are plenty of videos and gifs to showcase this. Why this appeals to me? I guess I just enjoy a good laugh. It’s just silly fun.

Another reason I’m a fan of his? This is a big one, but I really admire that Nathan is vocal about his faith in Hollywood and tries to be a role model for his fans. I’ve seen too many stars shrug off this idea. There was even a somewhat recent interview with a Christian website where he went into detail about how his faith defines him and how he wants to be seen as the Christian who acts, not the actor who just happens to be a Christian. I think that’s a really brave thing to do in Hollywood. He also takes part in numerous charities and has even gone to New York City to help the Salvation Army with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

BuOikn4IMAEXuoQI have also yet to hear of a bad fan encounter. From mall signings to random sightings in LA and NY, fans always talk about how sweet he is and the awesome hugs he gives. I also always get a good laugh any time I read about how good he smells. For those who have gotten to actually visit with him longer, I always hear about how personable he is.

BuOiPvyIgAALt2ROff the top of my head, I can think of three or four fans who have met him on multiple occasions. For one girl, her first fan encounter was at a signing. When she mentioned her Twitter username, his head popped up and he immediately gave her a hug! Some devoted fans have also been able to visit the set whenever they were in California. One fan got to even have breakfast with him and his girlfriend. Each and every one of these fans come back with lots of stories about conversations they’ve had with him. Oh, and more hugs!
I mainly use Twitter and message forums to interact with other fans. We’re not the largest group, but we are very excited to see Nathan spread his wings in acting – especially in dramatic roles. I think I speak for the majority of his fans when I say that I always felt that Nathan’s strongest scenes in “iCarly’ were the serious moments. Also, the fans loved his appearances on both “CSI” and more recently “Major Crimes.” You can only imagine how ecstatic we were when we got confirmation he was going to be in a major motion thriller! We’re all just super excited to see where his career will take him.

So there’s my answer as to why I am a fan of the “adorkable” and talented Nathan Kress.

I love this and especially that he seems to be a person of character. He’s going to weather some storms over that! But that will only make him better and a real light.

Into the Storm was Nathan’s first major motion picture appearance, and I hope to see him again on the big screen very soon.

A Thank you and a Note About Upcoming Events

ThorinThere are so many of you who have been gracious enough to share a lot of information with me. I want you to know I appreciate your notes. It has kept me apprised of what’s going on; otherwise, I would be completely clueless.

I have been distracted by getting a business off the ground, which I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to do. But a business is like a child. When it’s an infant, you cannot leave it alone, and it demands most of your attention. That meant other things had to go, and sorry, Richard, but that included you.

Thankfully, baby has calmed down a bit and will now let me sleep through the night, as it were, so I can spend a bit more time with the Richard stuff. And as we’re all about to witness the last push for the Hobbit series, I have some fun planned. Most of which involves giving some things away. Some of the items were given to me, and some I’ve acquired on my own. We’ll see if the donators want credit. If so, I’ll give credit like mad. Otherwise, the items will still carry some value (sentimental if nothing else) for those who are interested.

Other than that, thanks for bearing with me when you’ve asked me if I knew something, and my response was, “Huh?”

Note: I really, really haven’t forgotten about The Lords of the North audio book. I still plan to give at least one of those away as well. But the timing isn’t right yet.

And Meg is far from alone in attending more than once. There are some people who have attended upwards of eight times. At least eight is the most viewings I know about. I’ll bet there are some who have attended more. :D

Some of you (and you know who you are) need to share publicly what it’s like to see this several times. If you’re not comfortable, I completely get it, but I hate that there are only a handful of us who have gotten to hear about it. Those of us who are not able to attend will take all the crumbs we can get. We may be deluded into thinking we might make a loaf out of it somehow. :p

Sometimes You Can’t Help Sounding Like a Frau

This whole Richard Armitage/Lee Pace thing really is a bit comical and disappointing. It’s not the thought of the validity of this relationship being proved or disproved that engenders my response, and it’s not really about these two men. It’s about the larger issue of this maniacal need to assign something sexual to people who are together in seemingly commonplace situations. I’m not strictly thinking of the park bench scenario but of all the scenarios that have somehow been inferred as portending a sexual relationship. Oh, sure there could be a sexual relationship (I’ve never ruled that out), but I’m talking about the “evidence” on which the conclusion it’s sexual has been drawn:

Let me recap:

  • Going to see a movie together
  • Attending a fundraiser with a large group
  • Attending each other’s performances
  • Eating dinner together
  • Eating dinner together with family present (gasp)
  • Wearing each other’s clothes (oh damn, that’s so sexual)
  • Staying in each other’s homes while visiting (don’t grown, middle-aged men know they cannot do this without it being sexual)
  • Visiting each other during the holidays (definitely up to something sexual)
  • Refusing to answer questions about private life (oh shit; trying to hide something sexual)
  • At least one of the parties playing homosexual characters (yep, definitely a sexual relationship going on)

Maybe I’m naive, but can two people of the same sex who are middle-aged and single actually be close friends without someone else assigning a sexual connotation to their relationship?

A few weeks ago a friend of mine was over to visit, and she wanted me to see something on Facebook. She pulled it up, and then we ended up looking at a mutual friend’s photos, and this mutual friend had all sorts of vacation pics with another woman, and my friend said to me later, “I think she’s probably gay.” I asked, “What do you base that on?” The answer was the vacation pictures with the other woman, and that there were no pictures of men. Nothing else. Just the fact that these two women had been on vacation together on three occasions. Oh, and also that they’re both single and middle-aged.

Sadly, I’ve heard people make sweeping statements based on less, and this kind of assessment seems to occur much more often in the last several years. Can’t people of the same sex just be close friends anymore? Probably not since everything seems to be sexualized. That’s sad to me because friendships are so precious, and how frustrating to think that if you’re middle-aged, single and hanging out on a regular basis with someone of the same sex, then there is the specter that it is sexual. What a drain.

And even gay people are tired of the myth (see #3 and #4 and maybe #7) that if they are around people of the same sex it must be sexually motivated.

Then again, maybe it’s good for a laugh. James Franco seemed to give that appearance. Of course he was also promoting a project.

I did say that speculation was a favorite past time, and I still stand by that, but I also like to be reasonable unless, like Franco, I’m unreasonable to get a laugh or make a point.

note: Frau is a term commonly assigned to a certain set of fangirl and often used as an epithet on a particular gay gossip site. Frankly, I’ve found it uproariously funny when I’ve read it.
