Tangent — Sassy Librarians

sassy librarianI’m always surfing around for ideas, and I have a blast doing it. I run across all kinds of interesting things of which most will never see the light of day on this blog. But some demand I give them attention. So I can’t ignore any longer what I’ve come across almost daily for years — a set of people who have me curious about how they really are face to face. On the Net they’re pretty up front. Demuring is not their thing, and there’s a downright fiery nature about some of them. To the point that I’ve found myself asking: where did all these sassy librarians come from? Have librarians always been this way and I had them in a boring box but didn’t realize it? If so, my humble apology.

Even if I did pigeon hole them, I’ve almost always had a fondness for librarians. It started when I was ten years old. My friend, Debbie and I used to venture out on our bikes every Saturday morning to parts unknown — meaning we never knew where we were going to end up. One Saturday we ended up at the library, and this was not a common occurrence for me since I hated to sit still long enough to read a book. To go to the place that was teeming with them? No, I rarely darkened their doors unless my mother dragged me there.

That particular morning I was on a mission to read something about Fred Demara. Unfortunately, the library had no books about him, and I was about to leave when a lady asked me if I needed help. She had such a sweet face, and yes, she wore glasses. I was reluctant because the library ladies represented confinement to me. If she was going to help me find a book, certainly it was going to be something dull and dry, and I would have to endure it whereas I was on a lark to find out about The Great Impostor. But being respectful, I answered her question truthfully. She looked again in the card catalogue as I had done, and I remember wondering why she had to do what I had just done. I know now that all librarians do their thinking and everyone else’s too. I was pleased when she hit a wall as I had.

Then she pulled a rabbit out of a hat and said, “Maybe you could read a magazine article about him.” Wait! I didn’t have to read a book to find out about him? Hmmm, this was sounding good. Then she threw water on it by saying, “Or perhaps you could borrow a book through Interlibrary Loan.” Huh? No, the magazine was proffered, and I jumped on the suggestion. Besides I didn’t know what Interlibrary Loan was, and it sounded scary.

It was a little disappointing when she led me over to a shelf full of some of the dullest looking books in the reference section, and that’s saying something since almost every book in the reference section was dull looking. Dang! I knew I was going to have to read a book. She laid one of the dark green books open and began to explain how to use The Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature. It surely didn’t sound like anything about magazines, and if a librarian hadn’t shown me those books, I doubt I ever would have opened one. Little did I know at the time this was going to be a pivotal event in my life. Although I was aware it was an epiphany even if I didn’t know the word epiphany yet. When I realized I could look up almost anything in those books and get not a book but a magazine to read, my heart could barely stand it. Fred Demara was just the beginning!

I’m sorry to say I don’t remember that woman’s name. She was not at that library on a regular basis but was a floater. I found this out the next time I went to the library, and I was so bummed. I think she was at that branch perhaps one other time when I was there. But I never got to talk to her again. Lately I’ve been wondering if she was as sassy as some of these others I’ve encountered. Was she as intrigued by Fred Demara as I was? What happened when she left the library at night? If I were a writer, I would write a story about that.

Whatever she did, surely all of that information in her head and passion to share it went somewhere besides helping people find books and periodicals to read. Surely. And now I know it did.

Below are just a handful of the many librarians I’ve run across in my travels around the Net, and if any of them come around here to look, yes, I’m a subscriber to your blog.

Stiletto Storytime — Courtney makes it sound very hip to be a librarian. By the way, she has a book on her 2010 reading list, “Recent Reads,” that you will find of interest. I think she’s one of us. :D

Lipstick Librarian — Diary of a Library Fashionista — Librarian angst with humor which is definitely designed to take the mickey out of the rest of us who aren’t librarians. Enter at your own risk.

Librarians are Weird — No argument there, but I’ve always liked weird people.

Laughing Librarian — Home of the Zen Librarian. Aren’t they all a bit Zen?

Free Range Librarian — They let her out of Georgia. I would explain. Just read the blog.

Low Rider Librarian — Max is on a mission.

Warrior Librarian — What it says on the tin.

Meg Wood — One of the sassiest of them all, and I’m sure I’m not the first to say that. Some of you may recognize her name from “Boyfriend of the Week” fame, and yes, before you ask, RA made the list, and he had one of the highest scores ever. Did you doubt it? The real question is when is he going to make the list again? All I know is that he better make the list again if he actually comes to America. Meg owes us that. ;-)

Our own Phylly3 — what can I say? I’ve already made it plain how much I think of Phylly with my Do Wah Diddy Diddy award.

One more:

Under the Mad Hat The Madhatter doesn’t blog there much anymore. She’s started a Children’s book blog. You can check that out for yourself if you like. But what’s left of this blog is well worth reading, so here it is on my list! Maybe a little traffic over there might cure her ennui and get her to write again. I know I would love to see that, and I hope she still has some of those hundreds of posts she removed.

Oh, and as I was surfing around trying to find a free picture of a librarian with glasses (see the one above), I ran across this —–>

Is he cute or what? No, he’s not a librarian, but if he had been when I was single, I would have tried to live at the library.

And to be fair to him since we’re ogling his picture, here’s his website. The link to the blog entry with him in glasses is here. His blog has absolutely nothing to do with librarians or RA so this is a bona fide tangent. I just thought you might appreciate an attractive picture, and yes, he looks like someone famous. It should be pretty obvious amongst this crowd, so I’m going to be shocked if someone doesn’t jump up and say it quickly. I mean these guys look like they were separated at birth. Bet people tell him he looks like, uh, that other guy.

While I was on his site, I actually read several blog pieces and downloaded a book called Thrivability, which I’m currently reading. It’s found here. I also went on to download the book that inspired Thrivability. Its called What Matters Now, and it’s found here. See I can really go on a tangent. I was just messing around until now, and hey, I figured since this is a piece about librarians, I should at least read a book or two while I’m at it. Plus, most librarians I know love segues, so they ought to love this post.

And if Leif ever comes over to read this piece, yes, I’ve read the Utne Reader, and read it when you were probably too young to write for it. Uh oh, did I just give something away?

Entry — Fall, 2008

Autumn is finally here in earnest, and its beauty usually makes me pensive. But this year I feel rushed. There is so much I’ve wanted to do, and I’ve done almost nothing. Dad’s gone and Mom’s not in great health, but that doesn’t seem to stop her from talking about England. That’s all she ever talks about, and I know full well the chance we’ll go there is almost nil. She is simply not up to it, and I can’t be gone for another month. The world would stop around here if I were gone for a month as I was last summer. Then again, maybe that would be a good thing. LOL!

I was driving over to see Mimi the other day. I love to drive to Mimi’s. It takes me on one of my favorite routes. The trees are close to the road and seem to glow as if they’re lighting the way to somewhere sublime. I swear they’re backlit by something other than the sun. Even though I love visiting Mimi, I wanted to just sit in the woods. It was a gorgeous day, truly a halcyon day — sunny but cool and barely a cloud in the sky. Just enough clouds to make the sky seem painted. Yeah, sometimes it’s so blue it doesn’t look real. I’m blessed to live here.

But I’m not satisfied. I wonder what that really feels like. Maybe I experienced it when SO and I were coming to know each other or when we had the little SOs. I certainly love them all more than I can express, but feeling satisfied is so fleeting, I’m not sure I’ve experienced it. Maybe it’s not supposed to last long. I don’t know. So much I don’t know, and there’ s not much time to figure it out.

I haven’t watched any Richard Armitage for a couple of weeks, and I’m feeling some withdrawal. That simply can’t happen. It’s an inexpensive thrill for me even if I do have several hundred dollars invested, and I’m going to continue. And whom does it hurt? I watch when I have time! ROFLOL!! Yeah, I’ve made time for it, but I’ve got to have some outlet or I’ll go nuts, and I don’t want to go nuts again. I’d rather re-immerse myself in Robin Hood even though the frustration lingers about its ending and my silly urge to blame someone hasn’t gone away. Dominic Minghella, the chief writer, is apparently the guilty party. Must find out more about him because I need to understand how someone could develop those characters and then use them like that? Or maybe it was just over my head.

I’ve got to put all of that aside. At least long enough to rewatch the show; otherwise, it will be a constant specter, and I’ll never figure out what fascinates me so much about a character who’s a thug, and of course I realize he wants redemption. Redemption stories are almost always powerful, but I’ve never had quite this reaction to such a minor character.

I could dismiss it as mere objectification of Richard Armitage. Damn. No! But oh his movements are beautiful. Even his seemingly languid movements are rife with something begging to be explored. His movements in total are imbued with something I just can’t name. I would love to describe what it is, but words fail. They always fail. I guess I’m lazy. If it’s not easy to say, I drop it and move on. I’ve always had a problem expressing myself about anything that moves me deeply except to sometimes fob it off with a crack. But something truly fitting for what I feel never comes. My words never sound as I want them to sound. They’re prosaic, and I cringe at them.

A few days later:

I started reading Stanislavski. That’s something I’ve wanted to do ever since I was a teen and became fascinated with Brando and James Dean. Richard Armitage reminds me of those two more than any other actors. In my mind he’s those two fused. When I was a kid, Mom referenced the Actors Studio where Brando and Dean studied. She also spoke some of Stella Adler. From there it wasn’t too many steps to pique my interest in Stanislavski. I should have read him years ago. Only a few pages into his book and I was intrigued. He is speaking of things I’ve thought but didn’t feel free to pursue. To pursue them would be playing mind games, but heck, I’ve done that anyway. I wonder how much better I could have expressed myself if I had let my mind unfocus and tap into my subconscious. What I’m loving is that I have finally figured out what Richard Armitage is doing that has sucked me in so thoroughly!

This explains a lot and contains a description of what happens to me when I watch Richard:

The fundamental aim of our art is the creation of this inner life of a human spirit, and its expression in an artistic form… Our experience has led to a firm belief that only our kind of art, soaked as it is in the living experiences of human beings, can artistically reproduce the impalpable shadings and depths of life. Only such art can completely absorb the spectator and make both understand and also inwardly experience the happenings on the stage, enriching his inner life, and leaving impressions which will not fade with time. — Spoken by Director Tortsov from An Actor Prepares

The inner man he’s created, the inner life is playing out, and the truth of it is so beautiful I can’t get enough. There’s a sanity to it that I’ve seldom seen in an actor. Maybe I’ve never seen it.

“Impalpable shadings and depths of life.” What a way to describe it. Perfect really. John Thornton drinking tea at the Hale’s, nodding his head but unable to look at or speak to his mother after his rejection from Margaret, agonizing at the train station before Margaret comes back to him with her portmanteau. John Standring having his mouth full of sausage, being frustrated at his body’s impatience in an intimate moment with Carol, grinning at Carol as he tries on a suit. And Guy. Guy awkwardly holding the Sheriff’s bird, lighting up when he realizes the nun is a fake, looking intently at Marian when he sees she’s not wearing her betrothal ring, beaming when he comes to tell her the king is returning, rushing up like a little boy to her before the wedding. The ring of truth in these moments completely submerges Richard Armitage and the person he’s fashioned is there thinking and feeling and drawing me into his story.

“Will not fade with time.” Certainly I will remember John Thornton’s sweet eyes looking at Margaret as she explains her business proposition or Guy saying to his servant Thornton that the thing is to be understood.

[note: imagine my grin a year later when I read RA’s crack in this article. There will be more about all of this. It’s too much for one post. Oh, and I went on to read more Stanislavski and some Grotowski and Vakhtangov. Phew.]

Yorkshire Wench

NOTE: if you’re looking for Yorkshire Wench’s videos, they are no longer accessible online. Go here for more information.

Man, that name conjures all sorts of things. Of course John Thornton and his proximity to Yorkshire, and as a good little RA fan I know RA has ties to Yorkshire as well, and not only due to his interest in Richard III. Then there is my own experience with the place. I was simply overwhelmed by Yorkshire and really bummed I didn’t get to spend more time there. I love history and having read about the War of the Roses, I really wanted to see Yorkshire as I got to see Lancashire. Plus, my camera was having a problem when I drove through there, so I didn’t get one picture! Perhaps this means I have to go back to the U.K. and rectify that? Oh yeah, that’s what it means. LOL!

I wanted to embed this wonderful picture of the Yorkshire Dales, but WP is being a bully, so I’ve uploaded it, Do me a favor and click on the photo to see its original, and hey, you should probably vote for this picture on that site as well.

But all of that is not what this post is about. This is about someone who has supplied many RA fans with countless hours of pleasure in viewing videos and screencaps. YorkshireWench was one of the first to make fanvideos of RA’s works, and I have several. They are some of the first RA videos I obtained, and I still have them in online storage and some on my iPod. I think I’ve thanked her for those on LiveJournal on several occasions (but not as RAFrenzy). However, I’m going to thank her again because she’s shutting down her website, and I’m taking the occasion to tell her again how grateful I am for her work, which is really all I know of her except that I think her name is Claire and she’s a Pisces like me.

If you’re new to RA, then you have probably never seen these videos, since they are not on YouTube. Here is the link to her website [link disabled; see edit below] where you can get links to her videos on Vimeo. You will have to get the links on her site since all of these videos are private and therefore will not come up in search results on Vimeo. To access them you will need a password, which is listed on the homepage of her site. You can also download the videos in various formats. I recommend downloading because the quality is so much better than Vimeo.

Some of my favorites:

Any Other Name (Robin Hood)

Requiem for a Dream (Robin Hood)

Upside Down (The Impressionists)

Adagio for Strings (North and South)

What If (North and South)

Enough about that; go take a look, and if you’re offended by some slash, you might not want to look. I’ll tell you plainly that I’m not a fan of slash, but there are plenty of others to like, and I do. Just so you know, “Any Other Name” is one of my all time favorite Guy videos, I just couldn’t upload it or easily link to it for my top ten fanvids.

edit: since I wrote this piece, Yorkshire Wench has shut down her site, but I have obtained links to all of her Richard Armitage videos on Vimeo, which you can find here. If you want links to all of her videos, you can find them here. But if you go directly to Vimeo, the password is butterfly.

Chillin’

So I had to take another breather from all that’s RA. Actually, I couldn’t completely take a breather. I’ve just been reading and not talking so much about RA. Poor guy what would he do if I didn’t bring my nonsense to cyberspace? Probably be a lot better off, but I wouldn’t have nearly so much fun.

I’m going to tag this post a tangent, but I can’t bring myself to put tangent in the title, ’cause the word implies chaos, and I’m not feeling the least bit chaotic right now. Usually, I can’t sit still. Toes are tapping, fingers thrumming, or teeth clicking all the time. It’s a little bit of the curse from ADHD, but I refuse to take medication, and NO, I’m not saying others shouldn’t take medication.

Thankfully, I have relaxed for a few days, which is something I don’t do very often. It’s been pretty quiet around my house, and that’s probably because my kids are all gone somewhere, SO is very busy with other things, and NO ONE has come to my front door in almost a week. I guess everyone in town who might come to my door is on vacation. Yea! for vacations. :D Despite how it sounds in this post, I really do love people. They fascinate me and always have, and probably always will. But sometimes I need a break from all that goodness.

So I’ve been listening to some “new” music a friend sent me. I cannot believe I never bought these songs on CD, but I have them now! And they’re still good and oh so easy to chill to:

This next one is one of my favorite songs of all time. I have it on vinyl but why I never bought it on CD I don’t know.

Maybe in a day or two (or maybe in a few hours) I’ll be back waxing on and on and on about Richard Armitage. This is probably just the calm before the storm.

Hope you all are having a great week!

Have You Met Miss Hale?

Every time I sit down to finish off some more diary entries and plunge all of you back into my struggle with becoming a fangurl, my attention goes to the fanvids. I’ll get back to it, but maybe I don’t really want to know why I’m a fangurl. I’d rather indulge the obsession for now. In that interest, there is a recent “vidder” (can we come up with a better word than vidder? I don’t like it. Not sure I know exactly why, but I could speculate. Mainly it just sounds like something mundane, unimaginative and any other dreary word I can think of, and Miss Hale is far from that. So I’ll have to think about using another word in the future). Okay, where was I? Oh yeah, about to introduce you to misshale78. I’ll let her work do the talking.

A perfect video for Strike Back:

Can’t go wrong with Muse, but this is even better:

I like R&B/Pop Fusion if the singer is good and I don’t have to look at her/him singing. This is much better to look at:

There are so many more, and I left out a couple that I’ll post later. Go check out her channel if you haven’t already.

Just to Keep You on Your Toes

I’ve moved some things around. Addict List and Places to Get a Fix now have their own pages (accessible via the tabs across the top of the blog). This allowed CATEGORIES and TAGS to move up on the sidebar so they’re more easily seen. To make sure there is no confusion, just know that CATEGORIES are about broad subjects, i.e., Interviews, Voice work, Fanvids, North and South, Robin Hood, etc., but TAGS can be just about anything — whatever strikes my fancy sometimes but mostly about characters, i.e., John Thornton, Guy of Gisborne, etc. However, some tags can be used so extensively that I eventually need to make them categories, which means this is a work-in-progress. I’m sure this is a lot more than you ever wanted to hear about tags. LOL!

I would love to change some other things, but my WP theme limits me. At some point I may break down and mess with changing the theme, but I haven’t seen a free one that I like. And no way I’m going to do my on style sheet. LOL!

Of course if you have trouble finding something, you can always ask. :D

Who the Hell is Richard Armitage?

[NOTE: I now have a permanent page (“Who is Richard Armitage?”), and it has more video clips.]

This post is for all of you who have recently been introduced to Richard Armitage, the actor, via some poll or celebrity site where he popped up as perhaps the number two or even the number one contender in a contest. But you have never seen him animated and are completely perplexed by his fans’ love. Somewhere, sometime, some of you have uttered that question. I used to ask it myself! Hopefully when you are done with this post, you will begin to understand what his fans see. I’m not going to waste time trotting out his bio. You can read that on IMDb.

I want to gush and draw you the perfect picture of him with my words. To somehow convince you that he deserves the respect his fans give him. But I know it is probably wasted because I’ve been where you are, and no words were going to do it for me. I had seen stills of Richard Armitage before I saw him act, and I was profoundly unmoved and even put off. He just can’t be appreciated from a few pictures. The chameleon quality he brings to his acting helps to make him one of the finest actors, but it sometimes puts him at odds with stills. Seeing him moving and speaking is the key to understanding. If you have never done that, then you don't get it. But you’re in for a treat if you watch him. Not only is he extremely masculine, he is sensitive as well, and the superb mingling of these makes him an utterly beautiful man to behold. As gushy as I am, this post has been very difficult to write. I want to gush a lot more, but I’ll refrain and let him speak for himself.

Since you have landed here, that means you have probably clicked on a cache of a category or tag that I trashed. Before you get upset, you can always try the search function instead. It’s to your left on the sidebar unless you’re on a phone, and then it should be at the top right.

If you have read this far, I’ll grace you with a goodie (subject to change due to my mood). Today it’s an excerpt from RA’s most recent audio book:

Convenient Marriage excerpt

[note to regular readers of this blog: I could do this housekeeping under the covers, but this is much more fun. Proving that under the covers is not always more fun.] This is my continuing public service to all of Richard Armitage’s fans. See how good I am to you. I take care of you even when you hit a dead end. ;-)

Strike Back S2 Confirmed!

Yes, it’s finally been confirmed (if you don’t already know) that Strike Back will have a second run and this time with more episodes. So more John Porter! But there may be a catch.

Sky1 orders second series of Strike Back
Richard Armitage to return in 10-part run of drama about former SAS operative

Jason Deans
guardian.co.uk, Monday 2 August 2010 11.23 BST

Richard Armitage is to return to Sky1 as former SAS operative John Porter in a second series of Strike Back.

Stuart Murphy, the Sky1 controller, has ordered a second 10-part series of the drama following this year’s first run.

Armitage stars as Porter, a former special forces soldier now working for British intelligence. Strike Back was adapted from the novel by Chris Ryan.

Read the rest here.

I’m hearing that it’s going to be awhile — possibly the end of next year instead of spring. Visions of the promotion for Robin Hood S3 swirl in my head. Why the heck does it take so long between series? Is it RA’s schedule? Or is this how it works on British TV? Or what? It would seem to me that this kind of lapse would lose a significant amount of viewers, or am I just used to the U.S. where everything is so fast that we get antsy when it’s not? Yes, I realize we may be spoiled, so I’m wondering if my expectation level needs to be reset.

Oh, and if this is a long time between series, then I guess they really like RA and this show and perhaps there really are plans to take this to an international market. If so, I might actually start liking ol’ Rupe again. In the meantime:

Dear Mr. Murdoch:

I would be willing to pay to see this show if you can swing international access to Sky1. If anyone can do this, it’s you!

Thanking you in advance for a wonderful television experience. :D

Sincerely,
Someone who has decent disposable income and who would more than likely watch something else on your network, and may even subscribe to the whole damn thing.

edit:

Here’s the article that indicates an airing late in 2011.

Do Wah

Phylly, thank you so much for the Versatile blogger award. I guess those tangents weren’t too much then?

Before I get to the ins and outs of this award, I just want to say I really enjoy Phylly’s blog. She and I are on the same wave length if her interests are any clue. She has similar taste in music, movies, literature, humor, …actors. Her posts always strike a chord with me. One of my favorites is May 13th, “Show Your Pearly Whites!” Love this post for lots of reasons not the least of which is anyone who puts up a video of Allan Sherman is someone I would love to know better, and there are many other posts which make me think this about Phylly. That’s just the one that stands out in my mind. Wait. Then there was the post about Earth Day where she talked about being a great fan of Joni Mitchell. Me too! There was also the time she mentioned Ogden Nash, The Beatles, Far from the Madding Crowd and John Standring all in one post! I assumed she’s a fan of all of those, and it had me thinking me, me, me and also me are a fan.

So many times I’ve read her blog and had the thought, “I would have a great time with this person.” I’ve had these thoughts so much with some bloggers that I’ve wanted to acknowledge it with fanfare somehow. If you’re thinking this is a long thank you for my award, almost in the vein of an award for Phylly, then you’re right. It is in fact an award.

To Phylly goes the first ever “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” Blogger Award.

Phylly, may you be the first of many to wear it with a giggle if not with pride, and hopefully, this will keep us all from becoming too serious. As far as any rules for passing this on, it may be passed onto two bloggers who have you musing, “Yeah, I’d like to party with them.” But only two since oftentimes finding more can be a real hassle. Most important the recipients must not take themselves too seriously, which means they have to have some affection for Bill Murray. No Bill Murray love, no award. Fine Print: must like at least one thing — skit, movie, whatever –with Bill Murray. See his IMDb page for reference. The recipient must then share this Bill Murray love with us. Below is mine and what inspired this award:

I’ll get back to you on my Versatile Blogger award.

And just so this post won’t qualify as a tangent, I must have an RA segue, i.e., something that is not strictly about RA but not a tangent either. Sort of a variation of Six Degrees of Separation or the Kevin Bacon game.

So where was I? Oh, yeah, trying to think of something to say about RA. Since I’m tired, and I don’t really have anything to say about him this evening (yes, there are times when I really don’t have anything to say about him), how ’bout a picture?

and a song (the whole thing LOL!):
